Learn how to form and use the passé composé in French for completed past actions.
🔧 1. Structure of the Passé Composé
The passé composé is made of two parts:
➡️ Auxiliary verb (avoir or être) in present tense
+ Past participle of the main verb
Example:
- J’ai mangé. → I ate.
- Elle est allée. → She went.
⚙️ 2. Choosing the Right Auxiliary Verb
✅ Most verbs use avoir
- Nous avons fini le travail.
✅ Some verbs use être (mainly movement/reflexive verbs)
- Je suis arrivé à l’heure.
- Ils se sont levés tôt.
🧠 Tip: Use être for verbs like aller, venir, arriver, partir, naître, mourir and all reflexive verbs like se laver, se lever.
🔤 3. Forming the Past Participle

| -ER verbs | drop -er, add -é | parler → parlé, aimer → aimé |
| -IR verbs | drop -ir, add -i | finir → fini, choisir → choisi |

🎯 Irregular past participles: avoir → eu, être → été, faire → fait, voir → vu, mettre → mis, prendre → pris
🗣️ 4. Agreement with Être
When using être, the past participle agrees in gender and number:
- Elle est partie. 👩 → add e
- Ils sont arrivés. 👨👨 → add s
- Elles sont sorties. 👩👩 → add es
🚨 No agreement with avoir, unless there’s a direct object before the verb.
